Meskipun sepak bola nasional sedang dilanda keguncangan dengan adanya isu tentang sangsi terhadap PSSI oleh FIFA dengan polemik tentang calon ketua umum PSSI namun tidak membuat surut semangat salah satu club sepak bola nasional PERSIPURA JAYAPURA atau dikenal dengan julukan "MUTIARA HITAM" untuk bisa berkancah di Internasional untuk mengharumkan nama bangsa.
PERSIPURA JAYAPURA berhasil menembus 8 besar AFC Cup 2011 dan membuat sejarah baru bagi club tersebut dengan kali pertama menembus babak 8 besar dan club pertama dari Indonesia yang bisa melaju ke perempat final AFC Cup.
